Salt Spring Island Archives Post Offices |
November 9, 1991 |
For your information it would appear that the following Post Offices were open on Salt Spring Island.
| Salt Spring Island | 1874 - 1933 |
| Burgoyne Bay | 1880 - 1900 |
| Beaver Point |
1884 - 1951 |
| Fulford Harbour |
1893 - 1900 |
| North Salt Spring | 1893 - 1902 |
| South Salt Spring | 1900 - 1924 |
|
1924 - open |
| Ganges | 1906 - open |
| Musgrave Landing | 1923 - 1929 |
|
1929 - 1957 |
| Ganges PO | 1990 - open |
| Vesuvius Bay never had office even though it has been claimed that it did. |
Note:
• The post office named "Salt Spring Island" in the list above may well have been what was referred to by Salt Spring Islanders as the Vesuvius Bay post office, at Central.
• The school at Central was named Vesuvius Bay School by the powers that be (in Victoria) because Vesuvius Bay was the nearest landing place.
• There was certainly a post office at Central - in Broadwell's store
(in 2012 this post office shelving unit was delivered to Salt Spring Island's Heritage Museum, where it is currently on display)

I have the names of postmasters for above offices to 1970 and in some cases later.
I have a 1967 letter from a Miss G.C. Hamilton, Dromore, RR 1 Fulford Harbour discussing Post Offices and mail to Salt Spring Island.
If you have exact information on the location of any or all of the above offices I would appreciate a map showing the location.
Yours truly,
Bill Topping
