"This was a special tomato thrashing machine which was invented by both Jim and Harry. The tomatoes were picked, and fed into the hopper on top, and then the juice and pulp were taken by a chute into large hoppers on the field. In these large hoppers they were allowed to ferment for several days. This fermentation helped to prevent seed-borne disease, and also separate the seed from the pulp. After fermentation the pulp and the juice was all washed away, and the seed put in large seives and put out to dry." (James Seed Company at Cowichan)
