A1021Harry Wright Bullock: "Squire of Salt Spring"

Mr. Harry Wright Bullock was christened on the 27th day of October in the year 1866 in Chalfont St. Peter, Buckinghamshire. Harry, who was named after his paternal grandfather, is the oldest of three children born to George Martin Bullock and Cordelia Wright. His sister Mary Susanna was born in 1868 and his brother Percy George Martin was born in 1870.
Harry's mother comes from a family of wealthy land owners. His father is an Oxford graduate receiving his BA in the year 1837, his MA in the year 1841 and his BD in the year 1846. They were married in Buckinghamshire December 1864 at the ages of 35 and 48.
In the 1871 census, when Harry was 5, he lived in the Vicarage at Chalfont St. Peter, Buchinghamshire where his father was the Parish Vicar. The family had six servants living in their household.
Harry was a scholar in the 1881 census and still living at the Vicarage where his father was the Vicar. The family wealth had grown to include eight servants living in the household: maids, laundress, cook and gardener.
In 1882 Cordelia Bullock, nee Wright died at the age of 53.
By 1891 the family had moved. Harry was living on his own means in a cottage with one servant in Saint George, Bristol. Living in a house at the same address was his siblings and his father whose occupation is now listed as a clerk in the Holy Orders.
George Martin Bullock died in 1892. Harry Wright Bullock and his siblings each inherited a substantial sum of money.
Percy George Martin married in 1893 to Mary Louise Maud Bullock; another wealthy Bullock family with Oxford graduates.
In 1894 Harry Wright Bullock immigrated to Canada.
January 1901 Mary Susanna Bullock married Ernest Alfred Crofton. Ernest came from a wealthy Irish family. In the 1901 Salt Spring Island census he is listed as a farmer. Mary died in 1948 and Ernest died in 1961. They had no children.
Percy George Martin and his wife had two children in the 1901 Surrey, England census. His occupation is listed as living on his own means and they have three servants. One child died in infancy. There are photographs of his son Percy 'Gerald' Bullock in the archives.
Harry was living as a farmer on Salt Spring Island in 1901. He was living next door to his sister Mary and brother-in-law Ernest Crofton. He had two servants.
Percy George Martin came to Salt Spring Island as a visitor to Harry Wright Bullock in 1911 and then again in 1927.
Harry Wright Bullock died childless in 1946.
Percy "Gerald" Bullock inherited Harry's estate. The farm with mansion was sold and boxes of items were auctioned off; mostly to antique sellers from Victoria, BC.
