Bittancourt Store, Wharf and Dowry or Dower Houses (c1907) (Norah Nixon)
Vesuvius Bay. Store opened in the 1870s by Estalon J Bittancourt to serve steamer run between Victoria and Nanaimo. In the 30s, the building became Vesuvius Lodge, which was destroyed by fire in 1975

John Mollet home - Burgoyne Valley. (c1900) (Pat Lee)
Mr and Mrs John Mollet sit in their beautiful garden in the Burgoyne Valley. They left Island of Jersey in 1884, going first to Port Alberni where John was the Indian Agent. They came to Salt Spring in 1894, farming for awhile near Foord Lake.

Henry Stevens family moved into a log house at Central Settlement in 1887. They hired Sam Beddis and his son Charlie to build the large white structure called Stevens’ Boarding House.

Bittancourt Store (c1907) (Jessie Toynbee)
Abraham Reid Bittancourt built his home and store in 1904, at the foot of Ganges Hill. In 1910, the store business was sold to Mouat Bros. The space it occupied was later used as a meeting place for Ganges Methodists; office for Canada Customs; police station, jail and magistrates court for the Island. From 1945-1965 it was office and nursing home for Dr Arnold Francis, after which it was demolished.

EM Phillips cabin (c1890) (Bob Akerman)
This cabin could still be seen beside Cusheon Lake in 2009.
Charles and John Tolson (with rifles) built this cabin for EM Phillips c.1890, and their younger brother Leonard Tolson stayed there when he first came to Salt Spring Island. Phillips was a watercolour painter and author of a 1902 booklet about Salt Spring Island.
