The Barbara Lyngard Collection

In 1956, Barbarba Jean Coopsie married Donald Jack Lyngard. Barbara Jean Coopsie is the daughter of William Henry Coopsie and Inez Lina Maxwell. Donald and Barbara had two daughters, Danna and Pauline.

Barbara was born in 1935 and was raised on Salt Spring Island. She moved off Salt Spring where she met her husband. Jack was born in Edmonton, Aberta in 1933. He worked with the Royal Canadian Navy for several years. They moved back in 1973 where Jack (Donald) worked on the BC Ferries as a engineer. After he retired the couple came back to Salt Spring from the years of 1996 to 2015. They built a house on the old family property on Morningside Road.

Barbara’s grandmothers were Susanah George Trage (wife of Theodore Trage) and Mary Maxwell (wife of George Maxwell), this is where the Lyngard Indigenous lineage starts.

Inez Lina Maxwell grew up on Salt Spring and was born in 1905. The couple married in Victoria in 1930. They bought property from James Akerman on Beaver Point Road and that is where they built their family home. James Akerman “adopted” William Henry Coopsie from the Vancouver Orphanage at an unknown date. It is known that William was born in 1903. He grew up on Salt Spring working with James on the farm. Trage: Theodore Frederick Trage left Germany when he was 19 years old. He first went to New York where he worked as a cook. Then he followed the gold rush to California and then on to British Columbia in the Fraser Valley. Trage and his partner Henry Spikerman settled on Salt Spring Island, first at Fulford and then at Beaver Point. Theodore married Susannah George, a native woman from Cowichan (Born 4th Sept, 1844). Her traditional name was Musiqwiaht (or Musikwiaht). The couple owned the first orchard on Salt Spring out in Beaver Point, now known as the Manhennick area. They had four children, Henrietta Susanna Emma, Clara Paulina Minnie, Adolphus William and Bertha Emma Susan. It is said that they also adopted a young Indigenous girl but is unknown what happened to her.

Theordore began buying land all over the island. As his children grew older they began to live on the larger pieces. Theodore was one of the founding members of the Salt Spring Island Fruit Growers’ Association created in 1896. In 1902, Theodore passed due to heart failure. His son Adophus inherited the first preemption of land in the south end of Salt Spring. He sold it to a Victoria business man.

Susannah was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Clara and David Maxwell on Morningside Road until her death on March 1, 1932. She passed away at age 90, survived by her 4 children, 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Clara Trage was a very active member of the South Salt Spring Island Women’s Institute and the Burgoyne United Church.

One of Susanah and Theodores' daughters Bertha Trage went on to become a school teacher at Beaver Point School. She went to Beaver Point school as a young girl and used her inheritance to further education and become a teacher. She married Robert Daykin and had five children but still worked as a substitute at Burgoyne Valley School.

An obituary on the death of Susannah (George) Trage in the Sidney Review newspaper.

John was born February 11, 1899 in San Francisco and died October 10, 1942 in an automobile crash in San Francisco.

Terence was born January 4, 1901 in San Francisco and died December 1990 in Carson City, Nevada.

Terence included the earthquake information when he sent this picture. ÒDue to the San Francisco big 1906 earthquake, where we lived 7th and Natoma Streets (down town) all the homes, apartments and buildings were collapsed and the fires quickly started. We got out with just the clothes on our backs. Mom and Dad figuring we would soon be able to come back and we dressed in our play clothes. I remember seeing mom taking the pictures that had not fallen off the walls, taking them off and putting the pictures on the floor. All the doors jammed so dad had to take an axe and chop them down so we could get out. The city put up tents in all the parks for people to stay in (which was cold and dreary), (April is a rainee month in S.F.) We had to go to a school or other building, and stand in line to get a little food, chunk of meat, a loaf of bread, a little sugar, flour, tea or coffee. At night we could sit at the window and look down town and watch the fire burning down the town, it was awesome. The area around the outer Mission and Hillsdes did catch on fire and not too much damage due to being small. In about three hours after the quake, all the area where we lived was just a heap of ashes.
