Fred Crofton

Alfred Gerald Crofton (“Fred, we generally call him”, Fred’s father-in-law Rev. E.F. Wilson noted in his Illustrated Family Journal), younger son of an old Irish family, came out to Salt Spring from Dublin in 1897. In a 1972 taped interview in the Salt Spring Island Archives, numbered #1, Desmond Crofton tells why his father came to Salt Spring. “My father was supposed to go into the navy, but he didn’t like the idea. His father was a Captain in the Royal Navy in Dublin. So my father told him he’d rather go out to the colonies.” Fred Crofton was sent out to Salt Spring, “to learn farming from Mr. Scovell, who was an Irishman also from Dublin.” Young Fred Crofton was only 15 when he started his apprenticeship in farming. Jack Scovell was a great friend of Fred’s father; and owned a large farm at the head of Ganges Harbour. (NOTE: according to Fred Crofton’s eldest son Dermott in a 1993 interview with Ivan Mouat and Paul Layard. Part of this farm later became the Harbour House acreage) “So, my dear old dad, he loved the work out here. He found the work very hard, long, for little pay, and he’d be very ready for his bed, each night.” Young Fred Crofton enjoyed the life so much that his elder brother Ernest and younger brother Frank followed, to marry and settle on the island.

Salt Spring Island’s Crofton Family, with mother Nona Crofton (née Wilson) and her children (the ‘D’s’), and others; taken the same time as 2012010012
standing: Desmond (L) and Dermott (R)
middle row L-R: Diana,

Fred & Nona Wilson
Long hours of hard manual labour left little time or energy for much social life on the Island, but the delightful company of the Wilson daughters attracted every young bachelor who made his way to Salt Spring.

“The Wilson family settled on Salt Spring, five girls and five boys, and they certainly made things hum. Charlie [Tolson] was the first to succumb [marrying Evelyn Grace Wilson], then Frank Scott [marrying Kathleen Manorie Wilson], then Fritz Walter [marrying Winnifred Lois Wilson], then Fred Crofton [marrying Frances Nona Wilson], then George Borradaile [marrying Florence Muriel Wilson]. It was quite a flirtatious time for all of us.”

Presumably Nona and Fred used to tell their children of the courtship. Their son Desmond told reporter Lillian Horsdal, “When (my dad) was about 18 years old, this was about 1900, he realised there was the vicarage up here, (where) the Reverend Wilson had five beautiful daughters; so my dad used to spend a lot of time up there, along with my uncles.” Desmond Crofton explained that Nona‘s father, the Reverend Wilson, “was a pretty strict man, he didn‘t allow any drinking or smoking or cards in the house”, and “so therefore the young people didn‘t have too much social life at home,” so the young people would go off along side roads and into the fields for picnics; - possibly taking along a pack of cards , a pipe, and a bottle of wine to share. “So it wasn‘t long before my father and my mother, Nona Wilson, were engaged.”

Nona became engaged to Fred Crofton in 1901.

It was not until there were 6 children that Nona started running her home as Harbour House Hotel, when Fred left for The Great War (WWI).

Mount Talbot House
Now an abandoned ruin, Mount Talbot House in County Roscommon, Ireland, was built for Sir Henry Talbot in 1749. A Palladian House with the wings set at 45 degrees and joined to the centre block by curved open arcades. Around 1820 the centre block was remodelled in an impressive Gothic style. The centre block had a massive square tower at one end and a pair of turrets in the centre and a third turret at the other end.
Mount Talbot was considered a truly exceptional country residence.
The Talbots lived in great style from the Famine to the First World War in 1914.
Mr. Talbot owned the first car in Roscommon.
[Canadian peak Mount Talbot 2373m (7786ft.) is located on the Alberta/BC border - connection unknown.]

This photograph is of a young chap I have already met and researched, when I was researching Edward Johnston the noted calligrapher-to-be, for Andrew and Angela Johnston who came to the island on a speaking tour, following in the globetrotting footsteps of his ancestor - who camped here by Cusheon Lake in 1898. Pascal de Noë Walker - not a name one forgets easily!

Pascal de Noë Walker
Notice in the Times: 15 Jul 1902 Pascal de Noe Walker, born in England, resident of Salt Spring Island, married Ada Askew, they will reside in Vancouver.
Record of Marriage: 15 Jul 1902, Victoria. Paschal Woodley Riddell de Noe Walker, 23, resident of Victoria, born London, England, clerk, C of E, son of Arthur & Katherine Walker, married Ada Frances Askew, 22, resident of Victoria, born Chemainus, C of E, daughter of George F., (mother’s name not given). [NOTE: Pascal’s mother was known by her middle name, Isabel; first initial C.]

Pascal’s mother and sister visited him over the summer of 1898. Mrs. and Miss Walker expect to leave Salt Spring for Victoria on September 3rd, and after ‘spending a few days there, to go on to Japan and India, at which latter place another daughter is at present laboring as a missionary. The best wishes of all go with them.’
Reverend E.F. Wilson, Parish & Home monthly newsletter, September 1898

Excerpt from parting letter from Pascal’s mother C. Isabel Walker and sister Hilda de Noë Walker, printed in the same newsletter:
The visit of my daughter and myself to Salt Spring Island has been an interesting and delightful experience. We did not expect so much loveliness and grandeur of scenery, and have been daily, since we came on June 18th, admiring the rich beauty and fertility of the Island. Where the land is cleared of its wealth of beautiful undergrowth and magnificient timber, the crops and orchards seem indeed rejoicing in the splendid soil. ...
We have met with much kindness and generosity wherever we have been, and we desire to thank most cordially, in these farewell words, each of the friends we know we shall so often think of, and pray for.
