Susan Good was born in Vancouver but spent her early childhood on Galiano Island, the offspring of island pioneers. Her mother, Margaret (Scoones) Prior has lived on Galiano longer than anyone else at this time. (78 years so far) Her grandfather Frank Prior hailed from the Penders and Prior Park is named for his family. Good started school on Galiano before the family moved to Burnaby. Over the years the family spent idyllic Easter and summer holidays on Galiano. During the earlier years she gained lasting memories of her grandparents. Many of her Galiano family members were born on Salt Spring Island.
In 1998 after raising two children Susan and her husband Jim began their life on Salt Spring by purchasing a few acres with a crumbling old house in the Fernwood area. Historical buildings became an interest when they were informed of the house's history. It was a poultry exhibition building on the Fair Grounds, and then used for high school classes until 1940 when it was moved to it's current location.
Susan and Jim moved to the Island full time in 2002 upon Jim's retirement. A lifelong learner and history and travel buff, Susan soon became an Archvives volunteer. Organizational and computer skills, along with a love of people come easily to Good from her years of working as a nurse in many communities across Canada.
Some of her interest was inspired by the task of acting as an executor to the estate of her late aunt. Elizabeth Steward was a well known and accomplished island character. She became a nursing instructor, a nurse practitioner and an artist. She wrote and illustrated a book "Galiano Houses and People - looking back to 1930" which contained many stories of early life on Galiano. She never had children and kept many of the old family memorabilia. As an executor Susan felt the responsibility to preserve these important pictures, papers, and belongings.
History is important and as family members downsize to smaller houses Good hopes to save important historical relics. When the Salt Spring Archives partners with Galiano Island Good hopes to be a liaison.
