Barb Lyngard was born in her maternal grandparents' house, Morningside Road, Fulford Harbour, the third generation to be born on Salt Spring Island. Her two maternal great grandfathers, John Maxwell and Theodore Trage were two of the early pioneers to Salt Spring Island. John Maxwell married Mary Gray and Theodore Trage married Susannah George. Both families farmed, Maxwell's in cattle at Burgoyne Bay and Trage's, fruit farming and an orchard in Beaver Point. Her mother, Inez (Maxwell) Coopsie was the daughter of Clara (Trage) Maxwell and David Maxwell. Her father, Bill (William) Coopsie, born in Germany, became a foster child to James Akerman. Barb attended the Beaver Point School for her elementary years and graduated from the Ganges High School. Although a frequent visitor to Fulford Harbour throughout the years, and a period in the 70’s when she lived in Fulford for five years she returned to living here full time upon retirement in 1996. She volunteers for Fulford community events, volunteers with the Salt Spring Island Historical Society and also with the Archives. |
