Frank Neumann joined the
Salt Spring Archives in 2000, after he moved to Salt Spring, from Saturna
Island, his home for thirty years. Frank has a long history with computers and
education. He became Saturna Island School's computer coordinator when the school
acquired their first computer and he continued in this position until moving to
Salt Spring. Frank was a computer buff since his school days and he began to
build websites in the early days of the Internet. While on Saturna, Frank began
a project for their archives, scanning many historical images.
Soon after moving to Salt
Spring Island Frank looked at the Salt Spring Volunteers website and discovered
an advertisement for a computer teacher at the Archives. He answered the ad and
immediately saw a need for more than teaching basic computer skills. Frank
immediately plunged into the work.
Since that day Frank has
spent many happy hours designing and building the Archives website, scanning
hundreds of thousands of pictures, slides, negatives, newspapers and more. The
website has become notable in the Province for it’s scope, and it continues to
grow. Frank is enjoying learning more and more of what turns out to be a
fascinating island history. He claims his job will be over when history is
complete.
